Brief Introduction to the School of Public Health

School of Public Health was formerly known as Preventive Medicine Unit that was established by the Dali Medical College in 1983. In order to adjust to the new situation, new changes, new features of global public health and changes of medical model, and its new requirements for the training of public health personnel, Dali University and Yunnan Institute for Endemic Disease Control (YIEDC) jointly established The Department of Preventive Medicine in March of 2003. Then, its was renamed School of Public Health in April 2004. After more than 30 years of development, the school has established 5 discipline platforms, such as "Epidemiology and Health Statistics", "Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health", "Nutrition, Food, and Health", "Social Medicine and Health Policy Management", "Health Inspection and Quarantine".

At present, the School has a master science program (MSc) in Epidemiology and Health Statistics, and three full-time undergraduate majors such as Preventive Medicine, Health Inspection and Quarantine, Food Quality and Safety. Among them, undergraduate major in preventive medicine is one of the university-level key majors; the master’s program is jointly established by the School and YIEDC, and has become “the first batch of graduate education innovation joint training bases of Yunnan Province”. The undergraduate program in Public health and Preventive Medicine is listed as the advantageous feature key construction disciplines of the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” of Yunnan province. Least but not last, the School has four continuing education majors: a bachelor of prevention medicine, a college speciality of medical inspection, a bachelor of food quality and safety, and a bachelor of health inspection and quarantine.

There are 36 teachers and staffs at School of Public Health, including 4 professors, 8 associate professors/ senior experimentalist; 6 with doctoral degrees; 2 reserve talents of provincial academic and technical leaders of middle-aged and young; 1 discipline leader of the Epidemiology of the provincial high-level health technology talent, and 7 master’s supervisors. The school has teaching and research experimental room of 2863 m², consisting of 58 functional laboratories, and equipped with more than 600 teaching and research instruments costing more than 7-million RMB, which including the comprehensive laboratory of etiological tests established by the surveillance of environmental medium as well as chemical toxicants and physical factors of biological materials, the comprehensive laboratory of biological effects established by the detecting the biological effects of various factors in environmental media (including food), and the disease monitoring and etiology analysis as the main body to establish the disease control and monitoring laboratory.

The School has good cooperation with 27 practical teaching practice bases such as Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of Yunnan Province, Kunming CDC and Dali CDC, which can meet the needs for students’ professional practice.

The school took in charge of 11 programs of national-level, 9 of provincial-level and 14 of others in the last 3 years. Total fund of scientific research programs was 9.85 million RMB. 18 scientific papers have been published in SCI, EI, ISTP journals, and 15 textbooks published of faculty as Editor-in-chief or editorial members.

The School currently has 1000 undergraduate students, 61 master's students and 110 adult continuing education students. In the years of 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, the School won the first prize of graduates’ employment-related work.
